Verizon Launches Samsung SCH-u550
Written by Julian on February 19, 2008Today Verizon Wireless and Samsung announced the immediate availability of the new Samsung SCH-u550, a bronze colored clamshell phone that supports Verizon’s 3G EV-DO network and most of its advanced services, such as V CAST Video and Music and the VZ Navigator GPS navigation software.
While not specifically marketed as a music phone, the u550 is still pretty well equipped when it comes to portable music. The V CAST Music store support is backed up by a microSD memory card slot for storage expansion, and tunes can be enjoyed wirelessly thanks to Bluetooth stereo support. Other multimedia features are also available, including a 1.3 megapixel camera that can record video clips of up to 10 minutes in length.
In terms of more practical features, the SCH-u550 also has a built-in speakerphone function and an advanced speaker independent voice dialing application. More interesting, perhaps, is the text to speech capability that the u550 has that allows it to read out menus to the user and even read SMS messages.
The SCH-u550 weighs a very respectable 95g (3.35oz) and measures up at 95.8mm x 49.0mm x 16.3mm (3.77″ x 1.93″ x .64″) in size when using its standard 800mAh battery (an expanded 1420mAh battery is also available). Samsung rates the standard battery as being good for up to 3.5 hours of talk time or just over 8 days of standby time.
The SCH-u550 is available for purchase starting today for US$69.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate when purchased with a new 2 year contract.
