Blackberry’s History

Written by Julian on April 18, 2008 – 2:57 pm -

Have you ever wondered how Blackberry launched on the market ? Or how RIM started a very successful business ? Looks like bbgeeks.com had a brilliant idea to build the history of Blackberry phones, from their first cell phone .

Blackberry phones were on the market since 1999 but wasn’t so popular until the 21 century . In November 2004 Research in Motion , the producer of this handsets announced that they have over 2.000.000 clients in all the world . For RIM toked over 5 years to reach the first million customers and just 10 months for the second million . The third million of customers was reached in May 2005 and now it has over 14 millions of customers .

Back to the phones, Blackberry 850 from the image , was available through AOL in 1998 . At that time it featured email, organizer , calendar and Wireless Internet . The features were amazing for it’s time . We must say that 850 worked with just 2 AA batteries .

Blackberry 5810

Blackberry 957The next models of Blackberry looked more than the ones we see now , quiting the pager design and making the PDA one . The display was twice bigger , showing now 16 or 20 text lines . OnBoard memory was 8 MB and SRAM was 1MB and used a Li-Ion Battery .

Some sources afirms that 5180 was the first RIM with colored display , even if RIM says that 7210 was the first with colored display . We are getting closer to our time , with handsets from 5000 and 6000 series , targeting GSM customers . Spring and Verizon were becoming more and more popular and then RIM launched Blackberry 6750 , with CDMA support through Verizon Wireless . The phone had 10 MB onboard memory , a very good performance for 2003 .
